The Fort to Fort races begin in 1987 as a collaboration between the Rome Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Roman Runners. The Red Cross had a connection, Carole Glinski, with the US Air Force and was able to gain access to Griffiss Air Force Base. The race was named Fort to Fort because it ran from Griffiss to Fort Stanwix and back. Getting clearance for participants to run through the “gate” at Griffiss was quite a feat. In the beginning, the race only offered a 10k; it has evolved to include a 5k and a ¼ mile kids’ run. The number of runners has increased enough that we now offer chip timing and finishers’ medals.
