Smoky Hollow Half Marathon October 20, 2019

Smoky Hollow Half Marathon

Last winter someone spoke up and said, “There ought to be a Half Marathon on the Cup schedule!” Well, one thing led to another and the inaugural Smoky Hollow Half was born. This race is open to members of the Cup Series teams. If you want to run a Half and you belong to one of the five running clubs, please come over and join us. “Why just club members?”, you might ask. Well, a “club only” race is unique, it’s a friendly affair among familiar friends, but most importantly it keeps the race small enough to be manageable on this “maiden voyage”. But hey, if you have a friend who isn’t part of a club and they want to run, we won’t be turning anyone away.

How do I sign up?

The event is quite low-tech. No online registration.
Race Day Registration Only: $10
Race Start: 10:00 a.m.
Come to the Masonic Temple on Main Street (Rt. 28) in Newport the morning of the race, doors will open around 8:30. We’ll have you fill out an entry form, give you a bib. Cheap and simple, that’s our motto.

Is there a commemorative race shirt?

Shirt Pre-orders

$20 orange tech shirts by pre-order only
Deadline for shirt orders: October 4th 4:00 p.m.
Order through Eric at ejlauber@hotmail.com (Don’t forget to include shirt size)

What’s the course like?

If you are familiar with the Beer and Chili 10K course, rest assured you won’t be climbing THOSE hills. However, this IS a rather challenging course. You’ll be running on back roads climbing out of our valley, crossing a scenic stretch on the hilltops, then dropping back into the valley through “Smoky Hollow”.
*** I’d advise runners to take a drive and scout it out ahead of time, just so there are no surprises.*** The map below shows you where we’ll run.
The race will start at the water fountain on Bridge St in Newport. It will end in a little picnic pavilion just behind the fountain.

Will there be runner support on the course?

Each of the five running clubs will set up a water station on the course. The stations will be at miles 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 (give or take). You should not count on Sports Gels or food. However, Gatorade will be suggested to the water station crews.
There will be a Port-a-Potty at the start/finish area, but there will be none on the course itself.
